Carl Smith
Berlin-based American visual artist & musician Carl Smith returns to Oslo!
Having grown up in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Carl Smith was inspired by the vibrant art scene there and at a young age began experimenting with a variety of mediums including ceramics, metal welding, cement sculpture, painting, screen printing, graffiti, and even bronze casting.
After completing his BFA at Cooper Union in New York City Smith moved to Berlin Germany and has since continued exploring the mixed-media approach he has developed, which uses a combination of collage, photography, screen printing, and painting. Using this mixed-media approach, numerous limited edition prints are produced on archival Rives BFK cotton paper, large scale paintings are created on stretched canvas or linen, and many one of a kind pieces are done on wood which are finished with a lustrous resin lacquer.
Smith finds inspiration in the multi layered experiences he has while living in a big city and through the language of Urban Art, Smith seeks to tell visual stories and anecdotes. Some of these compositions are simply to capture a mood or a moment, whereas others are elaborate metaphysical landscapes depicting a world of simultaneous occurrences.
Smith has now exhibited his work in France, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, Holland, the U.S.A, and the U.K. and he has been showing his work consistently in Beverly Hills California at Artspace Warehouse gallery for over a decade now and even longer at their affiliate space in Zurich called Kunstwarenhaus.
His studio is now located in Berlin’s lively Prenzlauer Berg district and Smith can regularly be found at various weekend markets around the city, like the Mauerpark Flohmarkt, where he sells his limited edition prints as well as in his own showroom at Hiddenseer Strasse 7A. Please feel free use the contact button of this website to arrange an appointment at the Showroom.

Carl M. Smith is an American artist and musician who has been active in Europe for over 20 years. He is the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of the band The Instant Tigers whose debut album Psychic Road Trip is now available on all music streaming platforms.
As a solo performer Smith plays original compositions whose lyrics often reflect upon his many travels as well as his years growing up in New Mexico. Between the songs he often tells stories, humorous anecdotes, and a bit of background about what inspired the songs he has written.
Coming from an Americana, Blues, and Rock’N Roll background musically, Carl uses his voice, a vintage 1965 Framus guitar, and harmonica together with an energetic intensity that have made him known for delivering entertaining live shows. The additon of a couple specific guitar effects pedals also gives him the possiblitily to take the songs into slightly abstract atmospheric places one might not expect from a singer songwriter.
