This September, Galleri Schaeffers Gate 5 is proud to present Canadian artist Roger Mullin, who will exhibit some of the works he created during his Iver Jåks residency in Karasjok at the Sami Kunstnersenter in October 2013.
During his stay, Mullin completed several excursions in Sápmi observing the landscape and completing drawings, en plein air. The open-air drawings are distinguished from the 3-dimensional works created in the Karasjok studio. These studio works are made with thin steel wire and in part developed with a special self made tool. Roger Mullin’s plein air practice of delineation aims to capture the essence of landscapes and geometric form primarily through quickly generated orthographic views. For the past decade areas of the North Atlantic and subarctic have been the subject of his gestural, larger format sketches.

Roger was selected from a pool of 700 international applicants as the 2013 Iver Jaks Artist In Residence (Karasjok, Sápmi). The two month work period resulted in a solo exhibition at the Sami Centre for Contemporary Art.
The collaborative project. ‘Le Theatre Petit Cercle’ was awarded the Lieutenant Governor General of Nova Scotia Masterwork Arts Award, the Associate Collegiate Schools of Architecture’s Best Collaborative Practice Award, and the Design Exchange / National Post’s Gold Award for Best Public Commercial Building in Canada.
Roger Mullin is currently a full-time tenured faculty member at Dalhousie University School of Architecture. His research interests investigate the materiality and imperatives of buildings, infrastructures and urban form. This work is bracketed by concurrent research in methods of representation and educational design-build. Developments of these activities are carried forward through community partnerships and field-work.
Roger has practiced in Berlin and New York City and has completed many educational design-build projects, including at remote locations in Iceland and Norway. In 2023 Roger and students collaborated with Indigenous Knowledge holders to complete support structures for Indigenous youth athletes as part of the North American Indigenous Games, Kjipuktuk (Halifax), Dartmouth and Millbrook First Nation, Nova Scotia.
Roger was a keynote speaker at the Atmosphere 15_LAND + conference at the School of Landscape Architecture, Winnipeg, Manitoba and was Visiting Professor of Architecture at the Iceland Academy of the Arts as a comprehensive studio instructor in 2023. He has been commissioned to deliver drawing workshops in Canada, Norway and Croatia.
